January 28, 2013, 10:28 am -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- A quiet dock in London's borough of Tower Hamlets might be the last place you'd associate with classic Italian opera, but the team behind are looking to change all that, with another venture into site-specific, immersive opera.
Following great successes of Puccini's La Boheme and Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, both performed in the Old Vic Tunnels beneath Waterloo station, January 2013 sees Silent Opera return with its new project: Monteverdi's L'Orfeo, performed at Trinity Buoy Wharf in East London.
Telling the tragic story of Orpheus, who twice loses his beloved wife Eurydice, the opera tells of his journey to the underworld to attempt to save her from death.
Silent Opera, much like the silent disco concept, allows audience members to don a pair of wireless headphones, allowing them to wander freely through the performance space and thereby create their own immersive theatre experience.
Added innovations this year include the chance for one audience member per night to choose between two different endings. And for an additional £10 on 23rd and 25th of January, tickets will include a return boat ride from a pier in central London.
