-- /EPR NETWORK/ -- The latest adaptation of Swedish playwright August Strindberg's Miss Julie is set for an initial run at the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith. The reworking comes courtesy of internationally acclaimed director Yael Farber, and transplants the action into modern-day South Africa. Entitled Mies Julie, it's expected to run for ten weeks.

The revival follows hot on the heels of the Barbican's recent production, which starred Juliette Binoche as Mademoiselle Julie, which wowed audiences with a drastic overhaul of the classic play, augmenting the script with gallic chic and impressive staging.

The original play, written in 1888, deals with class warfare and lust, enacted as a naturalistic, but stirring battle of the sexes on a grand Swedish estate. The titular Julie attempts to escape her narrow existence in order to have a little fun. Drawn to a footman, Jean, who is unconcerned with social mobility and aristocratic values, Julie embarks on a flirtatious – and compelling - contest for power with Jean.

The new reworking is set in the remote area of Eastern Cape Karoo during the recent post-apartheid era, an ideal backdrop for the play's themes of class politics and psychosexual behaviour. Farber draws parallels between the tragedies of racial segregation and doomed love.
