The museum is located in the heart of Docklands in the shadow of Canary Wharf and a short walk from the Excel centre. The museum was opened in 2003 with a view to celebrating London's deep relationship with the river. London has for centuries been a major trading port, something that has ensured the city has survived for so long and become so large and wealthy. The trip is inspired by News From Nowhere , a science-fiction novel written by the great London thinker and designer William Morris. In Morris's book, he created a utopian vision of 22nd century London and the trip, which will be led by Dr Gregor Claude, will explore the broad history of the Thames as well as the utopian visions that the Thames has inspired.
