The Doctor Who star plays the title role in a hotly anticipated production

-- /EPR NETWORK/ -- There are still tickets available to see David Tennant in the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of ‘Richard II' which will be staged at London 's Barbican Theatre, the former home of the RSC in London , from 9th December 2013. Those who want to see the production, which is expected to sell out soon, can stay in the city at one of the many hotels in London near the well-known east London arts centre.

Gregory Doran will direct Richard II, the first production of his inaugural programme as director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, reuniting with Tennant and Oliver Ford Davies, both of whom starred in his 2008 production of Hamlet. Oliver Ford Davies plays the Duke of York.

This will be Tennant's fourth season with the Royal Shakespeare Company in the past 20 years. On playing the role of King Richard he said: “He's not a hero at all. He's quite a complicated character. So I'm daunted by the prospect of doing it justice but very excited to get a chance”.

Nigel Lindsay, who previously appeared alongside David Tennant in the 2003 production of Martin McDonagh's The Pillowman at the National Theatre, will make his RSC debut as Bolingbrook . Lindsay, who was nominated for the Best Actor in a Musical at the 2012 Olivier Awards for his starring role in Shrek the Musical, can also be seen on the London stage in ‘The Same Deep Water As Me', a new play by Nick Payne at the Donmar Warehouse from 1st August to 28th September 2013.

Michael Pennington, a leading British actor for over thirty years who has played a wide variety of roles in London 's West End and who has played most of the major Shakespeare parts for the RSC and for his own English Shakespeare Company, plays John of Gaunt.

Music for the show will be composed by Paul Englishby who has most recently written the score for the film adaptation of the stage musical ‘Sunshine on Leith'. Previous works include scores for ‘An Education', ‘Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day' and David Hare's ‘Page Eight' as well as the third season of the BBC's ‘Luther'.

While there is no availability for ‘Richard II' in Stratford-upon-Avon, where the play opens in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre from 10th October and runs till 16th November 2013, tickets are still available for the London staging when the production transfers to the Barbican Theatre from 7th December 2013 to 25th January 2014. It will be the first time that the RSC has transferred a production to the Barbican in a decade, and the first Shakespeare production since the company's departure from the City of London venue in 2002.

Richard II will be the first RSC production to play live this November in cinemas around the world and to be streamed, for free, direct into 1,000 UK schools.
