October 16, 2013, 7:40 am -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- Pop Art Design, the Barbican Art Gallery's latest exhibition, looks at the exchange of ideas between art and design in the popular, playful movement. While pop artists borrowed the visual language of the new media of the 50s and 60s – advertising, TV, commercial branding – designers reciprocated by creating 3D objects that were bright, fun and boundary-busting.
To demonstrate this creative dialogue, works by artists such as Peter Blake, Richard Hamilton, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol will be shown alongside furniture by mid-century modern greats such as Charles and Ray Eames, Ettore Sottsass and Achille Castiglioni. Among the highlights will be Studio 65's rarely exhibited ‘Leonardo' sofa (a deconstruction of the Stars and Stripes); Richard Hamilton's ‘Gold Guggenheim' (a model of the NY gallery covered in gold leaf) and Allen Jones's provocative ‘Chair' (a semi-naked woman with her legs in the air).
Running alongside the exhibition is a programme of pop-themed events including films, talks, exhibition tours, comics-making workshops (16 November), architectural walks (23 November), Italian architect and furniture designer Gaetano Pesce in conversation (27 November), graphic designer Nigel Waymouth in conversation (13 December).
