What Causes Headaches and Migraines

Press Release Body = The financial cost of headaches is great, with billions of
dollars spent annually for lost productivity and treatment.

Doctors have different theories about the causes of migraines and headaches. Most
doctors agree, however, there are multiple causes, and it's important to do a
thorough examination if you have recurring headaches.

Here are a few of the most common causes:

1. Stress and tension are high on the list of culprits. Stress causes the muscles in
the neck and head to tense up, thereby constricting blood flow to the brain;

2. Migraines may be preceded by a spasm of the arteries leading to the brain, also
diminishing blood flow to the brain.

3. Hormonal fluctuations may cause headaches or migraines. This may also be linked
to the contraceptive pill.

4. Buildup of toxins and poor liver functioning can also be responsible for
headaches because of the body's inability to eliminate toxins from the diet or the
environment.

5. Certain foods, such as chocolate, cheese, nuts, alcohol and MSG may trigger
migraines in susceptible people.

6. Low blood sugar levels and dehydration can also bring on headaches, especially if
you've skipped a meal.

7. Vertebral Subluxations can be the most common cause of recurrent headaches and
migraines, but also the most over-looked cause.

What are Subluxations, and what do they do?

In simplest terms, subluxations occur when one or more of the bones of your spine
(vertebrae) move out of position and create pressure on, or irritate spinal nerves.
Spinal nerves are the nerves that come out from between each of the bones in your
spine. This pressure or irritation on the nerves then causes those nerves to
malfunction and interfere with the signals traveling over those nerves.

How does this affect you?

Your nervous system controls and coordinates all the functions of your body. If you
interfere with the signals traveling over nerves, parts of your body will not get
the proper nerve messages and will not function at 100%. In other words, some body
parts will not be working properly.

Research shows the effectiveness of chiropractic care for sufferers of Tension
Headaches.

In a February 2001 study, many different types of physical and behavioral treatments
were used for patients with headaches. The results showed that chiropractic was
highly effective for patients with tension headaches. Those patients who were under
chiropractic care showed lower headache frequency and severity -- even after
treatment was discontinued

A September 2001 report compared chiropractic care to massage and medications for
pain-relief after a month of care. Results showed that the chiropractic group did
better than the massage group, and gave a decidedly large advantage to chiropractic
over medication.

These studies confirms what chiropractors and their patients already know: that
chiropractic is one of the most effective avenues of health for headache sufferers.
