Press Release Body = Jenny and Daryl Swearingen of Springdale, Arkansas rescued
Sophie when she was just 2 days old. She was the runt of the litter, a mere 4
ounces, and was not able to nurse. Jenny bottle-raised Sophie and took her
everywhere in a pink pet purse. An enduring bond developed between Jenny and Sophie.
On February 20, 2007, the Swearingens were horrified to learn that Sophie, then only
18 months old, had cancer. They were relieved when Dr. Michael Mohler at Animal
Medical Clinic in Fayetteville, Arkansas, said that Sophie's cancer could be treated
with a good chance of long-term success. But their relief turned quickly to despair
when they learned how much the treatment would cost. "We had already spent about
$1000.00 just to find out what the masses were and get a diagnosis. We had no money
left to pay the estimated $2,100 for treatment!"
Searching the Internet for information about Sophie's cancer (chondrosarcoma), Jenny
discovered the Magic Bullet Fund. The Magic Bullet Fund was founded by medical
animal writer Laurie Kaplan in conjunction with the release of her book, Help Your
Dog Fight Cancer. Jenny says, "Anyone dealing with cancer in a canine companion
should read this book from cover to cover."
The Magic Bullet Fund helps dogs like Sophie, who would otherwise not receive
treatment at all. On March 8, 2007, Dr. Dew in Fayetteville, Arkansas amputated
Sophie's affected leg at the Magic Bullet Fund's expense. Sophie is now a triped
and, according to Jenny, "Adjusting to life on three legs was no problem for Sophie!
Just yesterday, Sophie was out running hard and fast, jumping two railroad ties at a
time - she never missed a beat. I was so happy I cried. Now, thanks to the Magic
Bullet Fund, we look forward to many more years with Sophie."
The Magic Bullet Fund has helped 14 dogs with cancer through treatment, and has
helped 14 families to give their beloved pups a fighting chance to survive cancer.
This fund is unique first in that it does not contribute toward cancer research, but
rather sees real life dogs with cancer through actual treatment, and second in that
it operates nationally, not through a particular clinic or veterinarian. More
