New York City is much more than glitz and glamour. It has real depth and a fascinating sub-culture. Everyone knows that if you stray from the main tourist areas and wealthy parts you'll stumble into an entirely different world.
Sometimes dangerous, often dirty and neglected, occasionally
beautiful, New
York holidays with a twist are hot this season.
If you’d rather die than miss out worshipping at the city’s altars to the god of
shopping, forget it. You’ll be heading straight for Manhattan’s retail fleshpots.
But if you’re of a curious disposition and fancy grabbing yourself an adventure, why
not hit the seamy side? As seamy sides go, New York’s are spectacular. Talk about
New York holidays with a twist!
Dodgy? Potentially. Don’t go off half cocked with your £1000 Nikon round your neck,
wearing sandals, socks and a sun hat like a typical Brit. Find yourself a friendly
local instead, someone who knows the ropes. Ask the people who work in your hotel,
quiz the nearest tourist office to see if they have local guides on their books, or
ask a taxi driver.
Public transport isn’t seamy in itself but it’s a great way to observe ordinary New
Yorkers going about their everyday lives. Great stuff if you’re after a real flavour
of the city rather than a sanitised TV version. Or sit in Central Park for the day
and watch the great, odd, weird and wonderful go by.
Sound like your kind of thing? New York holidays, like any other destination, can be
as expensive or cheap as you make them. For adventurous types, rock bottom flights
and accommodation are usually a high priority.
Online holiday price comparison website BeatTheBrochure.com challenges the great
British adventuring public to find cheaper New York holidays if they can. “If there
are cheaper deals out there, in any brochure anywhere, we want to know about it.
Hitting an expensive capital city on any kind of shoestring can be a challenge. But
if you can pare down your travel and accommodation costs to a minimum you’re onto a
winner straight away.”
