Carrentals.co.uk provides hints and tips for holiday stress free driving

2 February 2011 – According to a Carrentals.co.uk poll, British drivers find driving on the right hand side of the road, being unsure of the country's laws and regulations, and no being familiar with the area to be the most stressful parts of driving when on holiday.

The poll results, which are stated by the leading car hire comparison website, show that the amount of motorists from Britain are concerned about driving in an unfamiliar place (47%), driving on the opposite side of the road (10%), local drivers' actions (26%), and 14% get stressed about not knowing the laws or rules of the roads.

“Driving in a foreign country can be worrying”, said Carrentals.co.uk managing director, Gareth Robinson. “By looking at a map and planning your route beforehand it can reduce the stresses and make it a pleasant time. By booking early and preparing for the holiday, this can make it an enjoyable time, and hiring a car is one of the most affordable ways to get around.

“Car hire companies push their own insurance policies upon the customer, which can be expensive and not always comprehensive. This drives up the cost, yet most people don't know that you can insure a hire car through a third party insurer for a lot less. If you have the documents ready at the collection point, then you can save money.”

Carrentals.co.uk has prepared a list of ways to keep British motorists who travel abroad stress free:

• Research first – Learn the ropes before you leave, and help yourself adjust by reading up on the regulations and rules of the road. Look at road signs and even try a left hand drive car to practice getting used to the different way of driving.

• Plan your routes – if you know where you're going, then you'll enjoy the journey more. Plan the route, read a map or hire a sat nav to help you get to your destination free of stress.

• Take breaks – taking regular stops allows you to stretch your legs and stay focused for the drive. You can stop at local attractions and sights along the way to enjoy the journey rather than it feel like a chore.

• Be fully prepared – take your rental agreement, insurance policy and driving license everywhere you go in the hire car. In many countries it's a legal requirement so don't be caught without them. If you're visiting a country where it snows, remember to stock up with de-icer, a torch and a blanket in case you get stuck.

• Coverage – In South Africa, Europe, the UK, Australia and New Zealand, you're normally covered for Theft, Third Party Liability and Collision Damage Waiver, but in some other regions you're not covered. Taking out a 3rd party insurance policy is a great idea and if it features Refundable Excess, then you can claim any charges back after any damage.
