Directrooms.com is pleased to announce that this year the
annual Vogalonga boat race will be taking place on the 12 June 2011 at
St. Mark’s Basin, Venice. The event takes place from 9am till 3pm and
sees rowing boats of all descriptions take part in a 30km row across
the lagoon to the island of Burano and back.
Those taking part competitively can complete the course in around two hours but
those enjoying the spirit of the event in fancy dress and at a more leisurely pace
can take up to five. The event has a huge variety of entrants, from across the
world. It has also increased the popularity of rowing in the area significantly,
with many rowing clubs having been created since its establishment.
The group was set up in 1975 to encourage rowing as a form of transport and rekindle
the spirit of rowing as it had previously been overshadowed by the extensive use of
motorboats in the lagoon. However it has now become one of Venice’s largest events.
Over 1000 craft are expected to take part, and with them over 5000 rowers. Entries
must be of traditional craft, but anyone can enter their boat of any size provided
it is a rowing boat.
Finding a Venice hotel at short notice may be difficult due to the numbers expected
to attend this event; therefore booking in advance is recommended to ensure a
conveniently situated hotel close to the event.
