Directrooms.com announces that this year the Portimão Portugal
Match Cup will take place from Wednesday the 22nd to Sunday the 26th
June 2011 in the Albufeira-Algarve. This is the 8th year the event has
been held. The event is hosted by Iate Clube da Marina de Portimão.
The winner of last year’s event was Peter Gilmour from Australia from YANMAR racing.
Gilmour beat his apprentice, Torvar Mirsky, also Australian, from Mirsky Racing
Teams, having won the Portugese stage last year. Previous champions have included
Sebastian Col from France for K-Challenge in 2008, and Chris Dickson from New
Zealand in 2006. This event was first held in Portimão in 2010, but Portimão is no
stranger to sailing events, having hosted the Portimão Global Ocean Race in 2008.
Portimão is the second biggest city in the Algarve, Portugal. It sits on the bank of
the Arade River, facing Ferragudo on the opposite bank. Portimão is most well known
for its famous fish restaurants and in particular its local delicacy of grilled
sardines. It is an excellent sailing destination and is also home to beaches such as
the Praia de Rocha.
It is advised that spectators book their Albufeira-Algarve hotels early to avoid disappointment, as the event is expected to attract high
numbers of tourists and competitors to the region.
For those unable to get a ticket, the race can also be followed on twitter, where it
will be updated as a live stream.
