DirectRooms.com reports that keen swimmers can head to Mana Island in Fiji where a swim challenge is being offered for experienced or novice swimmers in September.

The Mana Fiji SwimFest will see competitors swimming around the beautiful island to take on a range of distances ranging from 500m to a lengthy 10 kilometres. The event kicks off on 16th September 2011 with a traditional Fijian welcome consisting of ceremonial dances and music.

Participants can indulge in a few cocktails and the national drink of kava, but perhaps not too much as the next day is when the first swims take place.

The event isn’t necessarily seen as a race but on Saturday 17th September there’ll be the chance to challenge in any one of the three distances of 500m, 1km or 3km.

The swim will run along Mana’s North Beach but if the wind is too strong and affects the current, this may be changed to the South Beach.

On Sunday a 10km event is open for the hardened swimmer which practically circles the island running from South Beach to Sunset Beach, down North Beach and through the lagoon to Nukumana Island before returning to North Beach.

Lek Boonlert, marketing head at DirectRooms.com commented: “The swim is a great way to see the island and it’s spectacular coral reef as swimmers pass over the top. The event’s popularity will lead to an increase in bookings at hotels in Nadi as more people travel to the area.”
