Cheap London hotel rooms announced by website to coincide with five-week run of controversial Russian play

-- /EPR NETWORK/ -- London's south bank will play host to Maxim Gorky's Children of the Sun this spring, with an initial run of performances set for April 9th - May 19th at the National Theatre. Howard Davies will direct.

Written in 1905 while Gorky was imprisoned for his involvement in the aborted Russian revolution, the play obfuscates its contemporary social criticism with a historical setting, taking place during an 1862 cholera epidemic. So incendiary was the play's subtext, it was initially banned, before debuting at the Moscow Art Theater in a production that cast Anton Chekhov's wife, Olga Knipper, as Lisa, the only character who can sense the health crisis - and socio-political turmoil - ahead.

Gorky's target is clear from the title, which refers to the privileged elite dominating Russia at the time, epitomized by Professor Protassov, whose intellectual idealism doesn't help him understand the plight of the proletariat. His ignorance of the political reality in his country leaves him open to attack, a tension that drives the drama, and still resonates today.

This controversial play became a twentieth century classic. It is featured at the National as part of a series of Russian plays, adapted for English audiences by Andrew Upton. Upton and director Davies have previously collaborated on Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard and an Olivier-award winning adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov's novel The White Guard . Tickets cost between £12 and £34, and are available via LondonTown.com.
