March 18, 2013, 9:06 am -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- This March 26th, Howard Marks – aka Mr. Nice – will bring his hugely popular one-man show back to the stage. For one night only, An Audience With Mr. Nice will be packing in Marks' legion of fans to the Bloomsbury Theatre, in aid of homeless charity Crisis.
Britain's most prominent advocate for the legalization of marijuana is now 67, and his life story makes for a fascinating listen. Born in Kenfig Hill, a small coal mining village in South Wales, Marks finagled his way through a physics degree at Oxford and taught philosophy before embarking on a dazzling criminal career that included a stint working for the Secret Service as an informer.
Treading a fine line between the underworld and the establishment, Marks has been affiliated with the Mafia, IRA, MI6 and the CIA. His primary line of work was as a drug smuggler, a career that eventually saw him jailed for seven years in the US. Marks has used up to 43 different aliases, but it was the purchase of a passport from convicted killer Donald Nice that gave him the moniker that stuck. His 1995 autobiography of the same name became a bestseller, and was made into a film starring Rhys Ifans. Marks went on to write three more books, sealing his status as an anti-hero for Generation X.
Marks has spent much of the past fifteen years touring his life-story around university towns, and has won critical plaudits for An Audience With Mr. Nice. Tickets for the Bloomsbury event cost £15, and are available via LondonTown.com. The capital's premier events and booking site has also announced discounts on local accommodation, with numerous cheap London hotels participating in the deal for the night of the show.
