March 05, 2013, 11:05 am -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- Trafalgar Square's National Portrait Gallery is making history this spring, by being the first gallery to bring George Catlin's native American Indian portraits to the UK since the 19th century.
The paintings, which have never been outside the US in the modern era, form one of the gallery's featured exhibitions for the spring season, opening on March 7th and closing 23rd June.
George Catlin: American Indian Portraits will be the first time this collection of over 50 portraits are presented to the twenty-first century public in Europe. The paintings are the results of several trips made over nearly 80 years.
Between 1796 and 1872, Pensylvanian-born artist Catlin is known to have made five trips to the western region of the United States in order to create what is now one of the most prominent and extensive recordings of the native tribe.
The exhibition, for which entry is free, is being praised as a timely and insightful event, both historical and artistic in its significance. Art fans and historians who are travelling up to London to see the galleries will want to put it on their list.
