RideLondon brings 150 of world’s top cyclists to London in August

-- /EPR NETWORK/ -- RideLondon, the biggest road cycling event the capital has seen since the Olympics, rolls into town this month on Saturday 3th and Sunday 4th August 2013, and is one of the highlights of spending August in London , recapturing the excitement of the Olympics. Visitors arriving in London to take part in the event and to see 150 of the world's top cyclists race still have time to book a hotel in London where the city's parks, concert halls, theatres, museums, galleries and sporting venues are staging a series of high profile events this August.

As well as RideLondon, which includes four cycling events in one, there's the FA Community Shield on Sunday 11th August 2013, a England v Scotland friendly on Wednesday 14th August 2013 in celebration of the FA's 150th anniversary at Wembley Stadium where the RFL Challenge Cup Final takes place on Saturday 24th August while in cricket England play Australia in the fifth Ashes Test from 21st to 25th August 2013.

Bring the children to London in August and they can get free theatre tickets with the excellent Kids Week throughout the month. Other family entertainment includes the LolliBop Festival (16th, 17th and 18th August 2013) which relocates to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park this year, and an extravagant £10 million staging of Peter Pan (21st to 26th August) at Wembley Arena.

The last weekend of Augusta Bank Holiday weekend, is when the Notting Hill Carnival Europe's largest street party, takes over west London on Sunday 25th and Monday 26th August 2013 with music, flamboyant costumes and a colourful parade. On the same weekend the South West Four Weekender celebrates its 10th anniversary with headline performances by Armin van Buuren, Example and Groove Armada. In north London, at Kenwood House bands including Suede, Keane, and Laura Mvula are just some of the acts playing Live by the Lake (23rd August to 1st September 2013) on the edge of Hampstead Heath.

London's mini Edinburgh, the Camden Fringe continues throughout the month coming to a close on Sunday 25th August while the Real Street Food Festival encourages grazing along London's South Bank during the Bank Holiday weekend.

On the London stage, there's new drama from ‘Constellations' playwright Nick Payne whose ‘The Same Deep Water as Me' opens at the Donmar Warehouse on 1st August, ‘A Doll's House' (8th August to 26th October 2013) transfers to the West End to the Duke of York's Theatre after widely praised run at the Young Vic, and ‘Blue Stockings' is one of three new plays receiving their world premieres at Shakespeare's Globe this summer. Meanwhile, John Heffernan leads an excellent cast in a contemporary take on ‘Edward II' at the National Theatre, from 28th August to 26th October 2013.

In dance, Broadway classic ‘West Side Story' returns to Sadler's Wells (7th August to 22nd September 2013) after a sell-out season in 2008 while The Bolshoi Ballet continues its season at the Royal Opera House until 17th August.

Film4 hosts not one but two film festivals in London this month: the open air Summer Screen at Somerset House (8th to 21st August 2013) – one of the most popular London outdoor film screenings of the summer – and FrightFest (22nd to 26th August 2013), a four-day festival dedicated to horror films on the Bank Holiday weekend. It's shortly followed by the Portobello Film Festival (28th August to 15th September 2013) which takes the theme of ‘Rock and Roll Cinema and Art' for its 18th birthday.

Martha Wainwright plays the Union Chapel on Thursday 15th August 2013 and London's largest free jazz festival, the Canary Wharf Jazz Festival, returns to Canada Square Park for the weekend of 16th to 18th August 2013, while Cadogan Hall hosts From West End to Broadway! on the first three Thursdays of the month including appearances from Ruthie Henshall and Maria Friedman.

A highlight of the classical music calendar, the BBC Proms continues with the first of two appearances from Nigel Kennedy on Thursday 8th August, the first Free Prom (Sunday 11th August), and the 6 Music Prom (Monday 12th August), another new feature for the century-old music festival now in its 119th year.
