British Drawings: 1600 To The Present Day will celebrate the way British artists have used drawing in a wide range of ways over the centuries, including as ways to think on paper, to build up storehouses of ideas, as well as to make finished exhibition pieces. Drawings may not be as dramatic as paintings, but they tell us a great deal about the methodology and thought-process of an artists and are also often very beautiful in their own right, boasting a monochrome clarity that draws the eye. This exhibition will look at some of the best works in the V&A's considerable collection, including works by Anthony Van Dyck, Thomas Gainsborough, John Constable, William Blake, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Stanley Spencer, Lucien Freud and David Hockney and the display will also trace the central role played by drawing in portraiture and landscape, and in movements from Romanticism to Minimalism. Innovative contemporary works will demonstrate drawing's continuing importance for artists.
