LondonTown.com reports on the capital's best Christmas light displays

-- /EPR NETWORK/ -- They may seem to go up earlier every year but that doesn't take away from the magic of London's Christmas lights and decorations. Illuminating much of central London, they come in all forms – traditional, classy, quirky and extravagant. If you want to enjoy London at its brightest best, book one of the many cheap London hotels available on LondonTown.com.

One of the most magical areas in London during the festive period, Covent Garden is the first location to put up its decorations this year. From Wednesday 6th November, it will be transformed with a shimmering 60ft tree, a 15ft topiary reindeer and thousands of twinkling pea lights and baubles. The family favourite reindeer petting also returns, offering the chance to meet Santa's helpers every Saturday from 9th November to 21st December. Further festivities include a brand-new LEGO creation (following on from last year's LEGO advent calendar) and the world premiere of pantomime Once Upon A Christmas by acclaimed theatre company Look Left Look Right.

Shortly after, on Saturday 9th November, Regent Street gets in on the action with the lighting of its impressive display, which this year is themed around the new 20th century Fox DreamWorks animated film 'Mr. Peabody and Sherman'. One of the most breathtaking displays in London, the street's lights are set off beautifully against the regal sweep of John Nash's architectural elegance. Plus, this year the street boasts a whole day of traffic-free entertainment, with Emma Bunton and Jamie Theakston hosting a star-studded programme.

Two of London's most famous shopping streets, Oxford Street and Carnaby Street, also switch their lights on that week. Lighting up on 12 th November, Oxford Street boasts a new £1.5million display that's inspired by falling snowflakes and the atmospheric Christmas lights of Japan, Madrid and Berlin. Like Regent Street, there will also be a whole host of top artists taking to the stage for live performances and entertainment. Renowned for its unique festive decorations, Carnaby Street takes a 'Year of the Robin' theme this year, lighting up the area with hundreds of oversized 3D robins on 14th November. Coinciding with the switch-on, the street will also host a special Christmas Party, with many shops, restaurants and bars offering 20% discount.
