November 14, 2013, 12:56 pm -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- The Lord Mayor's Show takes place on Saturday 9th November and this year the fireworks make a spectacular return. Last year the display was cancelled due to financial constraints and safety concerns but with a number of adaptations they are back for 2013. The display is London's grandest firework show, with river barges piled high with explosives and set adrift on the Thames. To see the show in all its glory, spectators should position themselves between Waterloo and Blackfriars Bridges or around Embankment and Gabriel's Wharf – all the roads and both bridges will be closed to traffic. The fireworks are often considered the main attraction but they are in fact just the conclusion to the day's procession. The Lord Mayor's Show has been taking place on the streets of London for nearly 800 years, following the tradition that the newly elected Mayor of London would travel upriver to give his oath. More than three and a half miles long, the parade involves 6,000 people and fills the entire space between Bank and Aldwych. A crowd of around half a million is expected to gather and enjoy the show of military marching bands, Chinese acrobats, a procession of decorated floats and a gilded State Coach that the Lord Mayor travels in. The parade leaves Mansion House at 11am and returns by the embankment between 1pm and 2.30pm, and the fireworks commence at 5pm.
