New Delhi, Delhi, India, -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science and Research, a multispecialty hospital and research center, presented the results of a community survey regarding the quality of maternal care of women who recently delivered in South Delhi. The survey determines the quality of maternal care services across multiple parameters during the antenatal, intranatal, and postnatal period and estimates the gaps between the actual quality of care and national minimal care standards.

The participants of the survey were recruited from selected colonies in South Delhi (which is one of the nine districts of the state of Delhi) and represent high-income, middle-income, and low-income socioeconomic categories. The survey analyzed quality of care parameters like cesarean rate, episiotomy rate, continuous labor support, mobility during labor, number of antenatal visits, IFA supplementation in the antenatal period, etc.

The survey identifies a discrepancy between the actual rate of interventions like a cesarean section and episiotomy compared to recommended rates; a very low incidence of social support during labor; overuse of investigations like ultrasound and interventions like catheterization and IV fluids, etc. The survey concludes that a substantial section of the lower-income population of South Delhi fails to meet some of the minimal national public health goals related to quality of maternal care standards. In addition, several widely prevalent practices do not conform to the current evidence-based guidelines.

“The suboptimal quality of maternity care, including ability to meet minimal care standards, lack of antenatal education, high intervention rates, and non-compliance to evidence-based guidelines, may be a major public health concern because of its known contribution to high maternal mortality, cost of care, and adverse impact on service utilization.” says Abhishek Bhartia, Director, Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science and Research.
