Oakland, California, April 23, 2015 -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- Freedom Farmers’ Market has launched an Indiegogo crowd funding campaign we need your help to open in June.

In 2013, at the invitation of the restaurant owner of Brother's Kitchen, Farms to Grow, Inc. facilitated the creation of Oakland's Freedom Farmers' Market. First located on the parking lot of Brother's Kitchen, the market relocated in 2014 to 5316 Telegraph Ave.

Our mission is to provide distribution points for disadvantaged farmers, access to affordable fresh produce in areas devoid of supermarkets, nutritional classes and recipes as we engage a community vibe of self-reliance, cooperative community development to create a sustainable environment.

If incidence rates remain the same, the number of youth with type 2 diabetes in the U.S. is projected to increase by a staggering 49 percent over the next 40 years, while the number with type 1 is expected to climb 23 percent. African Americans are twice as likely to be diagnosed with diabetes as non-Hispanic whites. In addition, they are more likely to suffer complications from diabetes, such as end-stage renal disease and lower extremity amputations. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, published in the December issue of Diabetes Care)

In most cases diabetes, obesity and heart disease is controllable and preventable through education and changing poor dietary patterns which lead to chronic diseases. We as a country are eating ourselves to the emergency rooms and too often death.

We believe that providing access to culturally specific fresh produce and nutritional information, we can create and sustain healthier food choices to prevent chronic diseases.

FARMS TO GROW, INC is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to working with Black Farmers and underserved sustainable farmers around the country.

We are committed to Sustainable Farming and innovative agriculture practices which preserve the cultural and biological diversity and the agro-ecological balance of the local environment.

Market Details: Freedom Farmer’s Market will open on Saturday June 6, 2015 from 10 am to 3 pm located 5316 Telegraph Ave, Oakland California.
