Press Release Body: Has Digital Art Arrived as Fine Art? (has Digital gone Critical?) May 30, 2008 We've seen digital art for some time now in the form of screen savers, fractal designs and primitive pixilated "paintings." The term "computer generated" (CG) may aptly fit-suggesting that the "artist" played only a minor role in the creative process. Computer generated digital art of the past has been perceived and remembered as being soul-less, child-like, or unsophisticated. Computer generated digital animation in the movie industry has matured since it's humble beginnings in the early '80s. Landmark movies like "Toy Story" brought digital animation to an entirely new level of sophistication. Since then, realistic and life-like computer generated imagery in the movie industry has become a staple, commanding, often times, the largest portions of production budgets. Some fine artists have embraced the same digital imagemaking technology pioneered in the movie industry and are making incredibly beautiful and astounding fine art. One would be hard-pressed to identify some of the digital artwork being produced today as being digital in origin. "Digital image-making technology combined with the technology of digital printmaking marks the dawn of a new era of fine art," says Scott Menaul of Menaul Fine Art. "If Leonardo DaVinci were alive today, there is no doubt he would be exploring the open frontier of digital art; exploring the limitless possibilities of the new medium and producing some of his greatest works." Digital artwork does indeed take advantage of powerful software tools and computers; but like any other medium, in the hands of the true artist, creative expression of a high order can and is being achieved. Great digital artwork today can have soul and can invoke emotion and passion from its viewers. In the areas of interior design and dcor, artwork that is digital in origin has myriad benefits. The digital fine artist can customize his/her artwork to suit the exact needs of the collector, homeowner, or corporate client. Colors in an existing piece of digital artwork can be changed and matched to fabric samples or paint swatches. The size or proportions of the piece can be changed to fit the space exactly. The final artwork can be printed on canvas or paper as a fine art gicle (a method of reproducing fine artwork using high end inkjet technology). As the computer geeks are saying today, "digital has gone critical." It has reached critical mass and is just beginning to explode in the traditional fine art scene. About Menaul Fine Art: Scott J. Menaul, of Menaul Fine Art, is an award winning artist who has been developing his current style for over 15 years. He creates extraordinary, contemporary abstracts with the common theme of crystal geometric objects that reflect and refract the environment around them. The objects take on color and reflect the images of the nearby forms. The final artwork is then printed as Limited Edition gicles on canvas or open editions on paper.
