Press Release Summary: The Australian Immigration Minister, Chris Evans, has proposed new legislation aimed at preventing foreign workers from being exploited, and to prevent locals conditions and wages from being undercut.
Press Release Body: Skilled foreign migrant workers entering Australia on 457 skilled business visas have been the subject of concern that the 457 visa is being used by Australian businesses as a source of cheap labour.
For the first time, Australian Immigration Department will gain access to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and other Australian Government Departments. Such access will allow the Australian Immigration Department to check if workers on 457 visas are being paid correctly the market rate.
"The intention of the new laws is to clarify sponsor obligations and to provide fair and transparent mechanisms for temporary workers from overseas." said Senator Evans, the Australian Immigration Minister.
The Australian Immigration Minister said that small-time transgressors who failed to remedy a breach of the new law, as well as repeat offenders, would have their details published in an attempt to publicly shame them.
In addition to being publicly shamed, employers caught breaking the law could be fined up to $110,000, or receive a jail term of up to 10 years, or both.
The 457 skilled migrants can be isolated from normal family support networks and are not entitled to Australian Government services such as Medicare and welfare and so it is important that skilled migrants are not taken advantage of and exploited by employers.
