DirectRooms.com invites cultural travellers to experience
Ramadan in Dubai.
The holy month of Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and begins this
year on August 11th and ends on September 9th. It is an important religious
observation for Muslims, and typically includes fasting, prayer, and spiritual
introspection.
Muslims believe the Islamic holy scripture—the Koran—was revealed to the Prophet
Muhammed during Ramadan; thus, Ramadan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar.
For non-Muslim visitors, Ramadan is marked by several events and religious
observations that welcome all faiths.
Iftar is the traditional evening meal, signified by nightly cannon fire and an
opportunity for believers to break their daily fast. Many hotels offer Iftar meals
for guests, where visitors can partake in a variety of traditionally prepared foods.
Even a cheap Dubai hotel will usually provide some sort of Iftar meal.
Most businesses and government agencies close for the day between 2pm and 4pm during
Ramadan; some offices open in the evenings for several hours between 8pm and
midnight.
Restaurants and cafes are closed during the day, but most open for extended night
time hours. Supermarkets and shopping centres are usually open during the day, and
they may remain open longer into the night.
According to Lek Boonlert, head of marketing at DirectRooms.com, Ramadan is one of
the best times to visit Dubai.
“Hotels do fill up quickly, as natives return home to spend the holiday with family
and friends,” Boonlert notes. “Foreign travellers should plan to book lodgings well
in advance.”
