Staff from The Co-operative Motor Group have raised an impressive £7,700 for charity Mencap by hiking an exhausting 21 miles across the Lake District.

The Miles For Mencap team gained sponsorship to climb several ascents over 3,400 feet in the Fairfield fell and Kentmere Valley areas of the National Park, raising money for learning disabilities organisation Mencap and its sister charity ENABLE Scotland.

Participants from the car dealership company overcame immense fatigue to cross the finish line and were thrilled to raise more than their original target of £7,000. People were encouraged to contribute to their JustGiving fundraising page and responded in droves.

The funds raised will go towards the charities’ Inspire Me initiative, which aims to assist 20,000 young people between the ages of 16 and 25 with learning difficulties in leading a more fulfilling life; challenging the barriers that lead to exclusion and lack of progression. Both organisations are also supported by The Co-operative Charity Of The Year partnership.

Katy Robinson, Digital Marketing Administrator at The Co-operative Motor Group, said: “We are proud to support such a worthwhile cause and are delighted that our fundraising was so successful. Both Mencap and ENABLE Scotland help those with learning difficulties and their friends and families to lead the lives they want to lead and encourage them to aim high, which is admirable.”

“The hike route took our team through some extremely difficult terrain, which they tackled with determination, inspired by the challenges that people with learning difficulties face on a daily basis.”

The Co-operative Motor Group is one of the UK’s top motor traders, with 23 sites across the UK and 11 major motor manufacturers involved in its high-quality car dealerships, including Renault, Nissan, Land Rover and Range Rover.

The Yorkshire-based group, which deals in both new and used cars, values its involvement in local community projects. Its other recent charity actions have included providing a van for Bradford Cancer Support and raising £10,000 for Diabetes UK.
