As of Spring 2012 low cost airline Easyjet has announced a new route taking passengers to the sunshine isle of Kefalonia in Greece. The route will operate three times a week throughout the main holiday season in Kefalonia which is between the months of May and October.

The island is one of Greece’s more untouched destinations and is less “touristy” than many of the more developed islands. The island became famous as a holiday spot following the 1994 release or the Hollywood blockbuster Captain Corelli’s Mandolin as tourists flocked to see the beautiful landscapes captured by the movie.

Easyjet are not the only carriers operating flights to Kefalonia from Gatwick as Monarch, Thomson, Thomas cook and Olympic all plan to fly there next year. Managing director of travel firm Kefalonia.co.uk said “this new route will be a great boost to the Kefalonia hotels and accommodation market on the island and should mean increased price competition on the flights which is great for tourists”.

The island has very popular resorts although the more preferred destinations with tourists are holidays in Skala which is in the South of the island and is considered by many to be the islands best resort. The busiest of all of Kefalonia hotels are in Lassi which, although one of Kefalonia's more built up resorts is very popular with families and hotels in Lassi are very busy during the summer months.

Following Greece's recent financial stresses any boost to Kefalonian Tourism is welcome news on the island and should help inflate visitor numbers.
