-- /EPR NETWORK/ -- Projects Abroad announces new environment and conservation projects in the heart of Africa. The latest volunteer placements are part of development plans for a wildlife reserve in Kenya that focuses on the protection of an endangered species of giraffe.

The Kigio wildlife reserve, located in the Rift Valley, was once a cattle farm but now consists of 3,500 acres of woodlands, riverbanks and grassland and is home to 100 species of indigenous plants as well as the zebras, hippos, buffaloes and gazelles for which Kenya is famous.

A particular focus of the project is the protection of the endangered Rothschild giraffe, otherwise known as the Baringo giraffe. This giraffe is a separate species from other giraffes, and only a few hundred are said to remain in the wild. Therefore efforts to conserve and grow the population are vital.

Volunteers on the Kigio reserve project will live in a secure base camp on the reserve, and work under the close supervision of qualified staff. A typical working day will run from 8am until 5pm, with a two-hour break in the heat of the day for lunch.

Work activities could include digging new waterholes for the animals, building hides and creating new trails, population studies, and essential outreach work in local village schools and communities to educate local people about the work of the project.

Projects Abroad also offers other similar conservation volunteer projects and journalism internships in South Africa.
