Raleigh, NC, April 28, 2014 -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- With finals just around the corner, now is the perfect time to start preparing for exams. As the team from StudyRight – a Raleigh-Durham-based study skills training company – discusses in their newest e-book, avoiding procrastination is a vital skill for success.

The e-book, “The Essential Student Handbook to Studying for Finals,” teaches students a practical, research-based approach to studying for finals. For a sampling of the skills addressed in the resource, try these three tips to begin preparing for your final exams.

1) Set a review schedule today, and get accountability to keep it.
Studies have found that spreading review sessions out across multiple days can bring students as much as a 150% retention improvement. With finals just around the corner, make the most of this “distributed practice effect” by setting and keeping your review schedule.

2) Ask the right questions to study on the most important material. Study time is limited as finals approach quickly. This makes recognizing the most important concepts in each class highly important. Begin by asking questions of study materials to sift the essential from the nonessential. For example, “Which concepts appear in at least two learning experiences?” and, “What has my teacher emphasized?” can be helpful questions to filter one's study materials.

3) Don't forget to self-test. Creating self-testing opportunities is vital for effective finals preparation. Nothing provides as accurate a gauge of a student's preparedness for an exam as a practice quiz. Multiple options exist for self-testing, including flashcards or apps like Quizlet. To make the most of this, however, be sure to write answers down before checking them in order to be fully prepared.
