Joshua Berman and Chicki Mallan, authors of Moon Handbooks Belize (Avalon Travel Publishing, 2005), have been honored with a prestigious Lowell Thomas Award by the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) in the Best Guidebook category.

Moon Handbooks Belize is considered the definitive guidebook to one of the most fascinating and accessible destinations in Central America.

The results of the 21st Annual Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition (which is, in essence, travel writing’s Academy Awards) were announced last week in Las Vegas at SATW's annual competition. Bronze winner Moon Handbooks Belize was one of
1,385 entries in 27 different categories.

The competition was judged by faculty members of the Missouri School of Journalism who said: “The conversational writing takes this guidebook beyond just a comprehensive, detailed listing of what to do and where to go. The authors blend history, environment and ‘need to know’ information in an entertaining way. The guide handles all budgets. The itineraries and sectional maps at the beginning
introduce the country and allow readers to get a quick overview before diving into the details.”

Other winners in the competition include the Los Angeles Times, National Geographic Adventure Magazine, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, and Travel + Leisure.

The Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition is named in honor of the late Lowell Thomas, an acclaimed broadcast journalist, author and world explorer. It is sponsored by the Society of American Travel Writers Foundation.
