Los Angeles, California, July 12, 2007 - Based on congressional designation, the nation commemorates National Disability Employment Awareness, every October. The activities for heightening consciousness of this month\'s campaign are led by the Office of Disability Employment Policy or ODEP under the Labor Department Office.
Most of the activities focus on producing materials that would increase the awareness or consciousness of the public to the skills contributed by the workers in America who have acquired disabilities.
Usually, the private sectors, local up to state and federal governments with active cooperation of the various advocacy organizations spearhead various activities and events that center on the theme announced by the Secretary of Labor. Their main objective is to highlight the capabilities of the job candidates and most especially, the employees with existing disabilities.
During the announcement of the official theme, Roy Grizzard, ODEP\'s assistant secretary of labor enthuses that America\'s employers would be benefited once they give a chance for Americans to work although they have disabilities. According to him, people with disabilities would clearly help in creating \"a winning team.\"
ODEP is actually the very first \"assistant secretary-led\" office in the nation specifically addressing the policies that has significant impact on disabled people. The main purpose of these policies is to tap on the potentials of people with disabilities and find them employment and recognition for their abilities.
Upon the ODEP jurisdiction, methods were developed to set up 3,500 \"One-Stop Career Centers\" all over the nation. These centers aim to serve the people who have barriers in finding competitive employment, particularly those with obvious physical disabilities.
Furthermore, due to constant collaboration with the other agencies in the Department of Labor, like the Civil Rights Center and Employment and Training Administration, ODEP has developed a checklist on disabilities, which will assist the successful local level implementation of the Workforce Investment Act\'s Section 188.
