sustain local club throughout their three day marathon to provide
sport wheelchairs for young people.
Press
Release Body: Sleaford netball club, of Lincolnshire
are celebrating the break of a new world record for charity.
24
players played in two squads to beat the previous record, held
by Airborne Netball Club of Bristol, after playing a continuous
marathon for 58 hours - smashing the previous record by two hours.
According
to Guinness world record rules the two squads had to play in rotation,
with any player leaving the building unable to return. Consequently
entrants had to eat, sleep, shower and change within the confines
of the sports hall complex.
Spanning
from Friday morning until Sunday evening, Coach Rachael
Scott admitted that at times it was difficult to prevent
the team flagging:
“On
Friday we had a lot of support, Saturday was quiet which made
it difficult, but on Sunday afternoon there were loads of people
and the players went from playing at a snail’s pace to probably
harder than most matches. The adrenalin was pumping and the play
so intense that everyone was going for every ball and every goal
was going in.”
On
one of the hottest weekends of the year, conditions were sweltering
and players rotated every four hours, with two hours free to rest
and recuperate. As tiredness set in however, and with injuries
including a twisted ankle and broken fingers, it was a case of
whoever was fit to play.
3,231
goals were scored overall, averaging an amazing 55 goals an hour.
Wiltshire Farm Foods Grantham kindly sustained
the athletes with hot food for the event, with a view to raise
money for the Wheel Power appeal, aiming to buy
2,012 sports wheelchairs for young people by the 2012 London Olympics.
“It
is the hardest thing I have ever done but totally worth it, and
we’re very grateful to our sponsor Wiltshire Farm
Foods,” said Rachael. Wiltshire Farm
Foods, leading supplier in "frozen
ready meals", were delighted to contribute and support
them through this challenge.
