30 years after coming up with an idea for an improved 3D arcade game, Nigerian programmer Deji Akadiri finally brings his vision to a mass market with the iPhone.

Exactly 30 years ago, Pac-Man introduced us to a new genre of video games; the maze-running ghost-eluding character, gobbling up pellets to score points. It's a genre that has stood the test of time, until now.

Pac-Man became an instant classic, and its enduring appeal means it is still one of the most popular arcade games. Pac-Man has seen many makeovers and facelifts over the years, culminating in the lipsticked Ms Pac-Man.

In spite of spawning so many clones and spin-offs, for 30 years, the game has remained essentially unchanged.

All this has just been turned on its head with the launch of a new iPhone game in the familiar genre, but this time, instead of being played on a flat surface, the action takes place within a true 3-dimensional cube. DejiCube has literally added a new dimension to the game.

DejiCube is the brainchild of British-born Nigerian programmer Deji Akadiri, now resident in Winnipeg, Canada.

He first developed the idea of a 3-dimensional cube chaser game in the 1980's whilst in university. The limited personal computer hardware available in those days did not do justice to his early vision, and the game's audience was limited to Deji and his younger brothers.

With the recent emergence of the iPhone as a serious gaming platform, he resurrected his old idea, and the result is DejiCube, which he wrote in the evenings, juggling his time between his full-time job as a technical architect for computer services vendor HP, and entertaining his new-born baby boy.

The author is hoping that his game will become an overnight success, 30 years after its initial inception.

DejiCube is available on the apple app store: http://itunes.apple.com/app/dejicube/id378704792?mt=8#
