The National Holiday of Tumpek Landep on the 9th of October,
is the time when Balinese Hindus gather together to celebrate the
creation of metal goods.
During this day thanks are given for kitchen utensils, garden tools, machinery and
vehicles with offerings, prayers and feasting.
On this day people celebrate with ceremonies both at home and in their local
temples, in the hope of bringing good fortune to the metal goods owners. This is a
great time to visit the islands and see how local people decorate everyday items,
machinery and their cars in honour of the god Sang Hyang Pasupati, Lord of
Heirlooms, weapons and steel implements.
The family’s curvy, ceremonial Kris knife is an essential part of this ceremony and
each take theirs to the local temple for a blessing with holy water and to leave
offerings of woven coconut palm leaves, fruit and flowers. It is not uncommon for
travellers to also see many cars and motorbikes adorned with decorative palms, bowls
of fruit and flowers. According to belief, the more grand and decorative the
offering, the more powerful the item will become.
Travelling around Bali is very easy and they have a regular bus services and many
taxis, all of which will be decorated on this day. For those tourists looking for a hotel, Bali provides many places to stay around the various islands; ranging from cheap
hotels at affordable prices to luxurious hotels.
