Top car hire comparators sponsor fundraising challenge for
Diabetes UK
11 October 2010 – A trio of enthusiastic volunteers raised more than ‘£4,500 when
they climbed three of the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales whilst 3
legged. The event was sponsored by car hire price comparison website named Carrentals.co.uk who kindly donated a car hire
for the event which raised money for Diabetes UK.
Helping the charity for more than 15 years and those who completed the challenge
were Ann Bentley, Claire Moon and Steven Craig. All three volunteers have diabetes
and took part in the challenge for Diabetes UK so they could continue to provide kids with type 1 diabetes go on care
holidays. Gareth Robinson, Managing Director, was involved with the sponsorship as
he felt a close bond to the charity given his daughter who is 13 years old has
diabetes also.
Mr Gareth Robinson made the following comment, “As my daughter has type 1 diabetes
this charity and cause is one that I feel a personal connection to. I wanted to help
Claire, Steven and Ann raise the great amount of money they did for a great cause
such as Diabetes UK, as I understand how important the extra support they provide
for kids and their families is.”
The fascinating event lasted over five days, and saw the trio climb Snowdon, Scafell
Pike and Ben Nevis whilst they were three legged. The fundraiser commenced in
Scotland, then they headed to Cumbria whist finishing their challenge on the top of
Snowdon.
Claire Moon, made the following comment about their challenge, “Myself, Steven and
Anne were diagnosed with having diabetes from an early age. We have for many years
been helping Diabetes UK raise money for their care holidays. This challenge was
important as we had saw less donations this year, which is sad as we rely on these
donations to keep the holidays going. The holidays are vital respite for childrenand their families. For the kids it helps them understand they are not alone and
gives them the chance to meet other kids with the same condition as them.”
The holidays by Diabetes UK helps children with type 1 diabetes understand their
condition by spending time with other children with diabetes and receiving support
in a fun environment. There could be up to seven injections daily for children with
the condition well as constant blood glucose tests, also if the condition is not
managed in the right way it could lead to serious longer term health problems such
as kidney damage and blindness.
