A new exhibition in Paris called De Stijl has been described by its organisers as a first for France.

The team behind the display at the Centre Pompidou - on show until March 21st 2011 - claimed there has never been a proper retrospective in the Gallic nation of the movement led by Piet Mondrian.

Guests at Paris hotels have the opportunity to learn all about the work he carried out and how it fitted into the wider form of artistic expression.

"Beginning towards the end of the century's first decade and continuing through the twenties, De Stijl combined an aesthetic and social vision, total art, which forms a basis for understanding the sources of modern art," a spokesperson from the prestigious venue commented.

They went on to say that De Stijl and the work of Mondrian were key moments in the canon of 20th century art.

The artist was described as a central figure in the avant-garde movement between 1912 and 1938, with his influence felt in a variety of spheres, including the design of furniture, graphics and sculptures.

Attendees can head to the exhibition from nearby accommodation, such as Novotel Paris Est, from 11:00 to 21:00 local time every day except Tuesdays, when the complex is closed.

Admission costs between €8 (£6.80) and €12, depending on when people visit and whether they wish to see the museum's permanent collection.
