DirectRooms.com reports that at the beginning of June a special commemorative day will pay tribute to all of the people that have lost their lives while trying to defend South Korea during its many wars.

Memorial Day is marked in Jeju and cities around the country with services and the national flag is lowered to half mast to honour the work of the nation’s military personnel. In Seoul the National Cemetery hosts a memorial ceremony and reference is paid to the thousands that fought in the Korean War as well as all acts of duty during the country’s history.

During the Korean War approximately 138,000 people were killed in action while more than 450,000 soldiers were wounded. Civilian causalities are estimated to be close to one million with hundreds of thousands of people either killed, wounded or who went missing.

The memorials are held on the same day every year on 6th June and anyone using Jeju hotels could also take a trip to the capital, which is only one hour away, to see the War Memorial of Korea. The centre is a huge museum giving a detailed account of all of South Korea’s wars and where visitors can learn much more about the conditions and what life was like on the frontlines.

Lek Boonlert, marketing head at DirectRooms.com commented: “Jeju with its beaches and amazing sea views is a popular location for residents looking to getaway from the city. As Memorial Day is a holiday, hotel bookings will increase so visitors should make sure to plan ahead.”
