Barbican Centre will bring Viennese tradition to New Year’s in London

-- /EPR NETWORK/ -- This December 31st, the Barbican Hall will once again host an evening of Austrian music, featuring the Johann Strauss Dancers, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and a host of guests.

The concert is based on a Viennese tradition dating back to 1939, when conductor Clemens Krauss and the Vienna Philharmonic performed music by Johann Strauss II as a way of seeing in the new year.

Ever since, a similar program has been performed every year on January 1 and broadcast to a worldwide audience of 50 million, spread across 73 countries.

The show leans heavily on the Strauss family, with compositions from Johann Strauss I, Johann Strauss II and Eduard Straus being performed. Other Austrian composers feature, including Mozart and Schubert. The concert traditionally closes with an encore of Strauss II's trademark waltz, The Blue Danube'.

Tickets for the event cost between £19.50 and £142.50, and are available through website LondonTown.com. The site has also announced discounted rates on hotels close to the venue.

Among the hotels on offer, the Montcalm at Brewery London City on Chiswell Street, just two minutes from the Barbican Hall, is offering a 75% discount on double rooms, bringing the cost down to £208 for a night's stay.

On Clerkenwell Road , a ten minute walk from the Barbican, is the Zetter Hotel London. When booking now through LondonTown.com, guests are offered a 71% discount on petite doubles. The discount makes a night's stay £108.
