January 22, 2013, 12:30 pm -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- On January 19th, The Southbank Centre embarks on one of its most ambitious classical music projects to date. The Rest is Noise' takes a chronological look at 20 th Century music, deploying the talents of a wide variety of celebrated musicians, film-makers, public speakers, music historians and performers.
The London Philharmonic forms the backbone of each show. More than thirty concerts will be performed over the course of the year. The idea is based on the 2007 book of the same title, written by Alex Ross, which told the story of the most important musical, political and social events of the 20th Century.
Artistic Director Jude Kelly describes the festival as a way to view music through the prism of history, with its revolutions and counter-revolutions, its major moral and philosophical upheavals around race, gender, faith, political credo and pacifism, and its new relationship to technology and artistic democracy."
