The Book of Mormon, a sharp satire on Mormonism and religion in general, is set for an initial run at the Prince of Wales Theatre from February 25th to May 5th.
The show is the latest production from Trey Parker and Matt Stone, creators of South Park . Composer Robert Lopez, best known for profanity-laden puppet hit Avenue Q, contributed music to a show that's been a massive hit with critics and audiences alike. Lampooning the conventions of musical theatre as much as it does organized religion, The Book of Mormon has collected numerous awards since its first Broadway run in 2011. The plot follows two young Mormon Missionaries, posted to a remote village in northern Uganda , where a warlord is terrorizing the local population. The missionaries naively try to share the titular scripture with the oppressed villagers, but have difficulty conveying the message to a region beset by war, famine, poverty and AIDS.
The Book of Mormon has garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews for treading the right line between satire and offence. The original Broadway cast recording, released in May 2011, was the highest-charting Broadway album in over four decades, reaching No. 3 on Billboard.
