New exhibition shows London’s historic woodland as it was 100 years ago.

-- /EPR NETWORK/ -- A fascinating exhibition will shine a new light on one of London's most attractive outside spaces. Epping Forest has been a popular site for London day-trippers for centuries, and Wish You Were Here is a free exhibition that will study this in closer detail through historic postcards sent by Edwardian tourists. Epping Forest is an area of ancient woodland located just outside London. It is easily accessible from Stratford station, and LondonTown.com has all the booking information you need if you are looking for hotels near Stratford.

Wish You Were Here takes place at the Temple in Wanstead Park. The Temple is a historic building with a classical portico and dates from the 1760s. It houses the Forest Centre in the South of Epping Forest and also has a small shop with guides to Wanstead Park as well as more general information on Epping Forest and a selection of books and giftware. The Temple was built as a fashionable garden feature by John Child, Earl Tylney, and was designed to enhance the elaborate landscaped gardens of Wanstead House. It first appears on a 1777 map labelled as the Pheasant House and was later used as accommodation for Keepers on the estate. From 6 July to 29 September, the Temple will host Wish You Were Here, a collection of Edwardian postcards that feature different views of Epping Forest and still containing the often touching ephemeral messages that people wrote on them

After seeing the exhibition, you can tour the forest itself. Here you will find wildlife including deer, bats and Longhorn cattle. You can also enjoy peaceful walks, horse riding and mountain biking, or you can visit the forest's café, a listed building from the Victorian era originally built by John Butler as a venue serving non-alcoholic drinks. It has recently been refurbished and acted as a café since 2012.
