-- /EPR NETWORK/ -- The Malevolent Eye, a solo exhibition of new work by Rachel Louise Brown, opens at our Stow on the Wold gallery this Saturday, 2 November, with a private view from 2-6pm. The artist will be in attendance and discussing her work with collectors in depth from 4pm.

Fascinated by the way in which fantasy and myth are woven into reality, The Malevolent Eye is a culmination of Brown's response to unfamiliar places and strangers, a study into how the elements of subject, location and memory fuse together in creating an image.

The exhibition features two bodies of work; in the first Brown shoots at night, alone... capturing the landscape whilst experiencing fear and uncertainty. An imagined gaze watches her alongside the real risk of being caught. It is whilst feeling this unease that a photograph is made; abstracted from reality, turning it into something 'other'.

Brown then pushes the fictional narrative further by introducing characters into the 'non-scripted' story. The characters are cast through advertisements online and in local newspapers. People are invited to participate in return for a print of their image.

Most recently Brown has turned the lens up on herself... controlled completely by the camera, the location and the feeling of being watched by an unknown eye. The malevolence experienced whilst being both the subject and the image-maker has resulted in a series of self portraits entitled The Self as The Other.

The 32 new works in the show comprise individual images and diptychs. These lambda prints are presented tray framed with a matte laminate, in signed and numbered editions of 5. Priced from £800.

Accompanying the exhibition is a new limited edition publication by Rachel Louise Brown. This beautiful hardback book contains 78 pages and 44 images, plus a text by Christian Caujolle and a conversation between Brown and fellow artist Megan Powell. Limited to 250 signed and numbered copies, The Malevolent Eye is priced at £25.
