In keeping with the concept of the Gospel Roots series Caesar’s music with its soulful sound embodies the spiritual soul of gospel music historically and inspirationally.
Born and raised in Durham, North Carolina, Shirley began recording music at the age of thirteen. In 1958 she was asked to join “The Caravans”, one of the most popular gospel groups of that time. Caesar would continue to sing with “The Caravans” alongside such gospel greats as Albertina Walker, Inez Andrews and Rev. James Cleveland until 1966 when she decided to pursue a solo career. Upon leaving the group Shirley signed with HOB Records, and would continue to be successful with a career that has now spanned six decades. With numerous music awards and accolades this once “First Lady of Gospel” is now known as “The Queen of Gospel”, an honour bestowed upon her after the passing of the great Albertina Walker.
This album will allow you to enjoy some of the classic hits from Shirley such as “Jordan River”, “Tear Your Kingdom Down” and “Stranger on the Road”. Transferred and re-mastered from the original HOB Catalog each track on this album reflects Shirley’s music ability to stay timely and timeless.
