LONDON, August 04, 2014 -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- Some of the greatest photographs in history will be on display this month in London when the Getty Images Gallery in the West End holds its latest exhibition, titled Jewels Of The Archive. The exhibition opens on 13th June 6th September 2014 and admission is free. The gallery is located just off Oxford Street in the centre of London and visitors to the city hoping to discover the best and latest in London hotels, bars, shops and museums should first check out LondonTown.com, London's best website for tourist information.
The Jewels Of The Archive exhibition will feature a selection of classic images that collectively form a wider narrative on the history of photography. They are all taken from what is considered to be the most comprehensive photojournalism archive in the world, the Hulton Archive, which encompasses a huge variety of collections including seminal agencies that shaped the landscape of press photography, alongside smaller, but equally as precious, archives by pioneering photographers.
With this in mind Jewels of the Archive focuses on the collections that have given the world some of the greatest images across the gallery's 17-year history, such as the Topical Press Agency, Picture Post and the Daily Express archives. With many of these images originally seen on the printed page, the gallery walls bring a new context to this varied assortment of news, sport and entertainment photography. Images include important subjects such as the Suffragettes as well as examples of street photography serendipitous moments of everyday life caught on film for ever. Among the photographers featured will be legends such as Bill Brandt, Bert Hardy and Terry Fincher, and there will also be a display of ephemera that includes objects from the earliest photographic companies.
