This seminar will help medical practitioners understand what they can and cannot do within the legal framework of a healthcare setting, and suggests ways by which they can protect themselves and the organization from potentially devastating legal challenges. The speaker will focus on how participants can meet the requirements of the Health Care Quality Improvement Act to gain immunity from damages resulting from peer review activities.

The speaker will trace the peer review process from its early development to the present time and explain how to set up a viable peer review process that includes effective corrective action. He will relate how this history has contributed to the evolution of the legal status of peer review as we know it today.

The speaker will examine case law as well as both federal and state peer review law. He will also help participants understand ways by which to deal with the disruptive practitioner.

About the Speaker:

William Mack Copeland, MS, JD, PhD, LFACHE, practices health care law in Cincinnati at the firm of Copeland Law, LLC. A graduate of Northern Kentucky University Salmon P. Chase College of Law, Bill is a frequent author and speaker on health law topics and has served as hearing officer in numerous medical staff disciplinary proceedings.

A former hospital chief executive officer, Copeland is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association, American, Ohio and Cincinnati Bar Associations and is a life fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. He was awarded the American College of Health Care Executives Senior-Level Healthcare Executive Regent's Award in 2007.
