Press Release Body = Between 50 and 80 percent of women will experience back pain in pregnancy. A trial conducted by Melbourne University and the Royal Women's Hospital found that the BellyBra (pictured above) by Fertile Mind significantly reduced back pain which is great news for the 120,000 + women who give birth in Australia every year. Bellybra is a flattering undergarment that feels wonderful on, giving back much of the pre-pregnancy energy. Lightweight and as comfortable as a singlet, Bellybra has some extraordinary design features that immediately offer relief from weight bearing down on the pelvis, lower back pain and poor posture. Made from lightweight nylon/spandex ,the X-shaped back helps keep women cool and the soft-cup bust support allows people to wear it with or without a maternity bra. The trial found that the BellyBra, a support garment particularly suited to the third trimester (the last 10 weeks of pregnancy) significantly decreased back pain when sleeping, sitting, getting up from a sitting position, walking and working. "It does show that BellyBra decreases pain severity particularly in those areas that have to do with activity," says Doctor Louise Kornman who coordinated the trial. "I found the BellyBra to be an absolute lifesaver. It was terrible when I had to wash it as I found it good to sleep in and essential during the day!! If there is a next time I will definitely be getting another!!\" says Celeste from Roseberry, Tasmania.
115 women took part in the trial. About half wore the BellyBra and the other half wore an elasticized bandage. 78% of those wearing BellyBra said their overall impression of the treatment was that it was "helpful" or "very helpful".
The study also showed fewer women resorted to painkillers when wearing the BellyBra than those in the control group. Posture was also improved.
The results of the trial are being collated for publication but medical professionals and pregnant women can view a summary of the trial results at www.fertilemind.com.au.
BellyBra is available in black, beige and white in sizes XS to XXXL and costs $79.95. It is available from selected maternity and baby stores as well as physiotherapists and obstetricians. Ph: 1800 757 777 for stockists.
