Press Release Summary = With the goal of generating excitement and money, space enthusiast David M. Jankowski launches an apparel company to help make space travel affordable.
Press Release Body = Houston, Texas March 16, 2007 - Houston entrepreneur David M. Jankowski launched a first-of-a-kind web site so that every man and woman can go where only a few have gone so far.
"There are people out there who still think space tourism is an industry only the rich will have the pleasure of ever enjoying," says Jankowski, President and CEO of DestinySpace Enterprises.
His new web site, DestinySpace Enterprises (http://www.DestinySpace.com) is not just another e-commerce portal. The site is the first to sell space apparel where the profits go directly to programs that support space tourism, the recent phenomenon of space travel by individuals for personal pleasure.
Aside from astronauts, since 2001 four people have so far plunked down US$20-million to experience life aboard the International Space Station via the Russian Soyuz spacecraft. But even at that price, the Russian space agency is booked until 2009.
But Jankowski says he looks forward to the day when prices come down to Earth so that he and others from more modest means can travel to space on a regular basis. He wants everyday people to start thinking of space travel as something they too can one day enjoy.
His goal is to generate attention, excitement and support for the space tourism industry.
"The general public may not know it, but there are many different groups working to make space tourism more affordable to everyone," says Jankowski.
Just to name a few: SpaceShot Inc., founded by Sam Dinkin, offers flights into space as prizes via skill games. The Space Tourism Society, created by John Spencer, a space architect and author of Space Tourism: Do You Want To Go?; and the Space Frontier Foundation, dedicated to opening the space frontier to human settlement.
Jankowski's DestinySpace.com could go a long way in helping these and other groups reach their goals. And what's clear is that with ever-shrinking government dollars for space travel oriented programs, the support will need to come from private industry.
"As we see with DestinySpace.com there are business opportunities even if you aren't selling launchers and payloads," says Jeff Krukin, Executive Director of the Space Frontier Foundation, "DestinySpace.com is putting its money where its heart is."
Just how much of a boost could an apparel company bring to the space tourism industry? Jankowski will tell you the sky's the limit. Consider this: In 2006, apparel generated US$295-billion in retail sales in the U.S. according to Datamonitor. Of that, US$13.8-billion, is spent online, Forrester reports. Then there's the space enthusiast dollars to consider. Millions of people each year experience Earth-based forms of space tourism by taking zero gravity flights, visiting NASA centers, space camps, space theme parks and attractions, science centers, space museums, planetariums, and going on astronomy cruises. Space Tourism: Do You Want To Go? By John Spencer. "DetinySpace.com is the only company in the world that sells T-shirts, sweatshirts and other items featuring space tourism related designs for men, women and children," says Jankowski, "We did extensive market testing and I'm very confident that our apparel line will provide a great deal of support to the space tourism industry." He hopes other businesses follow his lead. About DestinySpace Enterprises: DestinySpace Enterprises is a Houston Texas based company created to help raise money for space tourism organizations/programs that are working to turn the dream of space travel for everyone into a reality. DestinySpace Enterprises has the support of the Space Frontier Foundation, The Space Tourism Society, and SpaceShot, Inc.
