In a bid to raise awareness of Fair Trade issues in the primary, a Florida-based company has launched a unique promotion. The online retailer GiftsWithHumanity.org is offering products made from recycled flip flops by impoverished artisans in Kenya. In recent election seasons flip flopping has become the verb of choice.
Perhaps the most unique of the products being promoted is a carved elephant made from washed up flip flops found on the beaches of Kenya. The symbol of the Republican party meets the poverty and ingenuity of Kenya in this humorous take on US politics.
Fair trade is a system of exchange that seeks to create greater equity and partnership in the international trading system by: . Providing fair wages in the local context, . Supporting safe, healthy, and participatory workplaces, . Supplying financial and technical support to build capacity, . Ensuring environmental sustainability, . Respecting cultural identity, . Offering public accountability and transparency, . Building direct and long-term relationships, and . Educating consumers. The one noticeable similarity between all the candidates is that they have very little to say on Africa and Fair Trade.
Giuliani has said the United States should focus its policy toward Africa on increases in trade. "U.S. government aid is important, but aid not linked to reform perpetuates bad policies and poverty," he wrote in a September 2007 Foreign Affairs article. However he holds between $500,000 and $1 million in investments in companies that work in Sudan, despite the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Our candidate for the Washed Up Flip Flop Elephant - Rudolph Giuliani
