November 07, 2012, 5:35 pm -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- A new play, The Dark Earth and the Light Sky' is to make its debut this month at the Almeida Theatre in Islington. It begins a two-month run on November 8th, with evening shows from Monday to Saturday and a Saturday matinee.
Penned by Nick Dear, the play is set in rural Hampshire in 1913 and tells the true story of Anglo-Welsh poet Edward Thomas, who enlisted in the army as his literary reputation blossomed (he was killed in action in 1917).
The drama centres around Thomas' encounter with fellow poet Robert Frost, who helps the struggling, tormented Thomas go from relative obscurity to a place in the canon of great 20 th Century writers. Just as their relationship brings him out of his self-doubt and puts him on the verge of international renown, Thomas joins the war effort, despite his status as a mature, married man which would have allowed him to avoid conscription.
This challenging, complex exploration of a tortured soul from a writer whose previous credits include the National Theatre's highly-acclaimed Frankenstein is directed by Richard Eyre, and will run at the Almeida until January 12th 2013. Tickets cost between £8-£32, and are available via LondonTown.com.
The website is also offering a number of discounts on London hotels close to the Almeida. The Jurys Inn Islington Hotel is one of the London hotels taking part in the offer. They've cut the cost of a night's stay in a double room by 81%, bringing the rate down to £95. The Jurys Inn is located on Pentonville Road, less than fifteen minutes walk from the theatre.
