Saloua Raouda Choucair will be the at the Tate Modern for her UK debut this spring

-- /EPR NETWORK/ -- This April history will be made on Bankside. The Tate Modern presents the UK debut of pioneering Lebanese abstract artist Saloua Raouda Choucair in an exhibition which brings together paintings, sculptures and other objects made by the artist over five decades.

This is the first time that the Tate Modern's program has been headed by a Lebanese artist. Born in Beirut in 1916, Choucair, now in her 90s, was an early innovator of abstract art in the Middle East.

Her passions for both Sufic and scientific principals can be translated through her experimental and geometric sculptures, which are both eerily evocative and gently pleasing to look at. A kind of seductive, more technical and material Rothko effect is achieved by her work.

You can see her art at the Tate Modern from 17th April to 20th October 2013.

Located along the banks of the River Thames in the former Bankside Power Station, the gallery was originally designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1947.

The gallery opened to great acclaim in 2000 and since then it has welcomed millions of visitors through its imposing doors. It looks best when approached from St Paul's or Blackfriars Station, crossing Norman Foster's 'Blade of Light' Millennium Bridge.

The Tate Modern offers an excellent permanent collection and a world class exhibition programme set within an architecturally striking building. Its little wonder this imposing Bankside spacehas quickly become themost popular modern art gallery in the world and one of London's real must-visit attractions.
