The Great Northern Hotel opens and The Shard reveals three new restaurants with a view

-- /EPR NETWORK/ -- The Great Northern Hotel, the most high profile new opening in London in May 2013, officially opens on Thursday 9th May 2013 following a £40 million refurbishment but for a sneak preview, the glamorous GNH Bar within it, occupying almost the entire ground floor, opens a week earlier. Later in the month, Plum + Spilt Milk the hotel's first floor 90-cover restaurant, adds to the many excellent London restaurants in the Kings Cross area to choose from with its emphasis on seasonal British ingredients sourced, where possible, from small independent suppliers on the Great Northern line.

For dining with a view it will be hard to beat the three new restaurants within Renzo Piano's Shard which are due to open in May. Oblix, the New York-style grill from celebrated chef restaurateur duo Rainer Becker and Arjun Waney, opens on the 32nd floor between Aqua at the Shard on the 31st floor and Hutong on the 33rd floor, both run by the Aqua Restaurant Group founded by David Yeo. London's Hutong, the first restaurant for the brand outside China, will follow the same winning formula as the well-known restaurant of the same name in Hong Kong, serving the cuisine of Northern China against a spectacular backdrop of far reaching city views.

On a smaller scale but with a talented team behind it, The Five Fields, a small Chelsea restaurant with room for only 40 diners, opens on Tuesday 14th May 2013. Young chef patron Taylor Bonnyman comes from the two Michelin-starred Corton in Tribeca , New York , head chef Marguerite Keogh, was formerly at Marcus Wareing at The Berkeley, and pastry chef Chris Underwood is ex Tom Aikens.

May brings the opening of two new theatres in London with the £2.2 million Park Theatre in Finsbury Park opening on Wednesday 8th May 2013 with These Shining Lives, a play which tells the story of the women who worked at Radium Dial during the 1930s, and the relocation of the Southwark Playhouse which opens at its new home in a huge warehouse on Newington Causeway in the heart of Southwark, SE1, on Wednesday 15th May 2013.

The purpose built Park Theatre, two minutes' walk from Finsbury Park tube station, will be a state of the art theatre with two performance spaces a two-tier 200 seat and a smaller 90 seat theatre an education floor and a cafe and bar with a late license. Set up by husband and wife team Jez and Melli Bond with support from high profile actors including Ian McKellen and Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch, the theatre is unique in this part of London .
